Generic retail root powder sits at 0.1–0.2% eurycomanone — a 5–10× gap that silently invalidates the dose-response picture for any consumer buying a "500 mg tongkat ali" capsule at the lower end.
The trials didn’t test root powder. They tested two branded extracts whose manufacturers have a financial interest in maintaining HPLC verification of their products. That is the entire reason the standardization gap exists — and the reason a brand Certificate of Analysis is load-bearing for any close-reading of a label.
Eurycomanone is the principal bioactive in Eurycoma longifolia root, the quassinoid most often invoked to explain the testosterone and cortisol signals in the trial data. Two cutoffs matter. ≥0.8% by HPLC matches the trial minimum and is the lab-tested floor for "trial grade." ≥1.0% is the full-replication threshold seen at the top of the LJ100 specification. Labels that quote total eurypeptides or glycosaponin percentages describe different molecular fractions — they are not a substitute for an eurycomanone number on a CoA.

A 30-capsule bottle of generic 0.1–0.2% root powder at $12 delivers roughly one-fifth to one-tenth of the eurycomanone exposure in Henkel’s trial — and Henkel’s population was hypogonadal men, not healthy adults with baseline testosterone already in the normal range. Talbott’s cortisol signal came from moderately stressed adults; Tambi’s cohort was men seeking fertility treatment. None of these populations is interchangeable with a recreational user buying a "testosterone booster" off Amazon. Cheap is not the same intervention; cheap is unpredictable, and unpredictable is not safer.
